Families of Redeemer


Families of Redeemer – Families of Redeemer is intended to build community, have fun, and foster stronger families. The group hosts events throughout the year, from casual evenings out for just parents, to group activities for adults and children.

Some of Redeemer’s “especially for families” events for 2017-18 include those below. Watch the website, FB and Instagram pages, and bulletin inserts for further details.

1-Oct Blessing of the Animals In keeping with the tradition of St. Francis of Assisi and his love for animals, the congregation and friends brings their pets to Redeemer for a special blessing. Patio on Palm, 4 PM.
5-Nov All Saints’ Wax Musuem An annual favorite, children in K-3rd grade “become” wax figures, representing the saints through the ages in Gillespie Hall. Between the 9 and 11 AM masses.
16-Nov Moms’ Night Out Join women of Redeemer for happy hour at Bravo Coastal. 8 PM.
26-Nov Annual Advent Event Every Redeemer household is invited to make an Advent Wreath to use at home during the four weeks of Advent, and a Christ Candle (which is illuminated on Christmas Eve), made from re-cycled Redeemer candles. Gillespie Hall.  Between the 9 and 11 AM masses.
10-Dec Advent Lessons and Carols This family-friendly service (less than one hour) features our Westminster and Canterbury Choirs. Children K-5th grade “build” an Advent Wreath on the church steps, while youth (6-12 grade) offer the pivotal scripture readings of the Advent Season, followed by a “lite bites” the whole family will enjoy. 5:15 PM.
17-Dec Decorate the Parish Tree The last Sunday before Christmas, the entire parish joins together to decorate the toweing parish Christmas tree. Gillespie Hall. Between the 9 and 11 AM masses.
24-Dec Children’s Xmas Eve – with Live Nativity Every child in the congregation is invited to “play a part” in the re-telling of Jesus’ birth (no rehearsals, no costumes, parents welcome!), and the newest baby in the parish portrays Baby Jesus. A “special visitor” attends every year, to the delight of children and adults alike. 3 PM.
6-Jan Epiphany Yule Log Celebration 11:00 AM
10-Jan “Lord, Help Me:  The Power of Basic Prayer,” a class for parents – a four-week study Fr. Charleston Wilson leads this four week course,  for parents and grandparents. 10,17,24,31 January, 1st and 3rd grade classrooms, 6-:30 -7:30 PM. Nursery and homework room provided staffed for younger children.
13-Jan Ringling Bridge Run/Walk Strollers encouraged! Runners and walkers too! Register via the YMCA website. The annual Ringling Bridge Run benefits the YMCAs in Sarasota, and Redeemer participants typically wear red shirts!  After the run/walk, meet on Redeemer’s parish lawn for a bagel breakfast, sponsored by Men of Redeemer. Event starts at 7:30 AM, and breakfast at Redeemer will follow.
28-Jan Annual Pancakes and Pajamas Event Yes, this is the one Sunday everyone gets to wear their PJs to church! While adults are in the Annual Parish Meeting, children and youth enjoy pancakes and a movie in Gillespie Hall. Following the 9 AM mass. 
 2-Feb Annual Dinner and Movie on the Lawn Always a treat, simple spaghetti supper is provided (everyone brings dessert to share, the beverage of their choice, and something to sit on). Served in the Eva Pope Room of Gillespie Hall.  “Lawn dining” with movie shown outside on the parish lawn. For the whole parish family. 5:30 PM. 
11-Feb Picnic in the Park Families of Redeemer gather for a pot luck picnic and a little kickball!  Island Park (across from the church), 11 AM.
18-Mar St. Joseph’s Day Celebration at Mandeville Beer Garden In honor of blessed St. Joseph, whose care for Mary and Jesus is an example for all, we will gather at the Mandeville Bier Garden to assemble Easter gift  packages for Redeemer’s shut-ins, to be delivered by our clergy.  4 PM. 
25-Mar Palm Sunday Tableaus Children gather as part of the Procession of the Palms, and head to Gillespie Hall where, by groups, they present the events of Holy Week in frozen tableaux. During the 9 AM mass.
25-Mar Palm Sunday Petting Zoo The parish family is invited to a petting zoo, with a gentle donkey and several of his barnyard friends, reminding us of Jesus’ triumphant entry to Jerusalem on the first Palm Sunday. Immediately following the 9AM mass on the parish lawn, under the oak tree.
1-Apr Easter Egg Hunt Immediately following the 9 AM Easter service, head to the parish lawn for our annual Easter Egg hunt. No baskets please, but bags for collecting will be provided. Redeemer’s “Flowering Cross” in front of church provides a meaningful spot for family Easter photos.
22-Apr Sunset Supper at the Beach Spring means our annual “Sunset Potluck Supper at the Beach.” Bring food to share, the beverage of your choice, towels, etc. White Sands Cabana Club, 5:30 PM. Gate code to be provided with your rsvp.
6-May Youth Sunday We celebrate all children of God throughout the year, but the 6-12 grade youth of the parish are especially highlighted on “Youth Sunday.” Youth serve in every capacity during our services – even delivering addresses in lieu of a sermon. The day wraps with our annual Graduation Dinner, honoring our high school graduates and their parents.
13-May Crossing of the Walk Marking the milestone of our 3rd graders’ “graduation” from the Bell Tower Wing where they have been since their nursery days), the parish lines the walk from the Bell Tower to the Gillespie Hall veranda to cheer them on to their “through high school” classrooms. Watch for the bubbles!
