Learn and Grow — Adult Discipleship at Redeemer — Winter/Spring 2011/2012

Welcome to Redeemer’s Adult Discipleship education offerings! We’re delighted to offer the following opportunities for learning and growing in your spiritual journey, and warmly invite you to participate in any of our offerings.

Early registration is recommended for all classes and events except for those held on Sunday mornings. • History of the Early Church

  Tuesdays, beginning 29 November / continuing four weeks
  Two sessions offered: Morning session 10:30 to Noon / Evening session 6:30 to 8 PM
  Dr. Stuart Prall
  This course covers the history of the early church from its beginnings in a small corner of the Roman Empire into the middle Ages. Each week will focus on a particular period beginning with The Primitive Church and the Roman Empire, with discussion of the Scriptures and early heresies, the Latin and Greek fathers, Nicea, the Papacy, and influential personages of the period. The course includes a class on Charlemagne and the Christianizing of western Europe and how that laid foundations for modern Europe, as well as a presentation on the Renaissance of the 12th century and its influence on the church. A discussion on the conflict between Church and State and how that tension has influenced nations and the church, concludes the study course.

  About Stuart E. Prall

  Stuart E. Prall, Columbia Ph.D. and Fellow of the Royal Historical Society, is a professor of English and Irish history at Queens College and The CUNY Graduate Center. Dr. Prall is the author of The Bloodless Revolution, England, 1688 and Church and State in Tudor and Stuart England. He is the editor of The Puritan Revolution: A Documentary History, and the coauthor of A History of England, 4th edition.

• A Study of Paul’s First Letter to Timothy

  Wednesdays, beginning 9 November / continues seven weeks
  Two sessions offered: Morning session 10:30 to Noon / Evening session 6:30 to 8 PM
  Taught by the Rev. Richard C. Marsden
  Come and eavesdrop on the sage counsel given by an experienced and tried church leader to his young apprentice. Listen in as the apostle Paul gives direction and encouragement to a young pastor of a local church who felt insecure and ill-prepared for the burden of leadership that was being laid upon him by his mentor. Listen in on his guidance to Timothy in issues of prayer, gender roles in worship, relations between church and state, and evangelism. Hear him challenge Timothy to stand for the truth of sound doctrine against the false teaching of the time. Join us as we look at Paul’s first letter to Timothy and discover its implications for us today. All you need to bring is your Bible and something to write with.

• All Saints Institute

  Bishop Martins of Springfield, IL to Preach in Sarasota for All Saints’ Day
  

  On November 1, All Saints’ Day, the Right Reverend Daniel Hayden Martins, Eleventh Bishop of Springfield, Illinois, will be the special guest preacher at the Church of the Redeemer, 222 S. Palm Ave. All Saints Day is a day for commemorating all saints, known and unknown, and Bishop Martins will preach during the morning 10 o’clock mass and the evening 6 o’clock Solemn High Mass.

• Overview of the Bible

  Wednesdays, beginning 26 October / continues eight weeks
  Two sessions offered: Morning session 10:30 to Noon) / Evening session 6:30 to 8 PM
  Taught by the Rev. Lance Wallace
  How well do YOU know the Bible? This Bible overview will cover all the 66 books, the general history of what happened in the Old Testament, several of the overarching themes that connect Genesis to Revelation, and discuss different methods to use for reading the Scriptures.

• Heart-to-Heart Women’s Bible Study of the Patriarchs

  Wednesdays, beginning 19 October / continuing 10 weeks / 6:30 to 8:30 PM
  Thursdays, beginning 20 October / continuing 10 weeks / 9:30 to 11:30 AM
  Group Study
  Beth Moore’s The Patriarchs: Encountering the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.
  An in-depth Bible study of Genesis 12-50 yields an exciting, engaging plunge into the heart of Genesis — to God’s remarkable pursuit of relationship and to the unfolding of His earthly plan: that through one nation—and ultimately, one man—all people on earth will be blessed. Many of the most profound and enduring concepts in the whole counsel of God’s Word are initiated in this marvelous book of beginnings. Full of twists and turns, ruin and redemption, revelation and mystery this Bible study keeps participants captivated by the God who stars in it! Explore concepts such as blessing, covenant, and promise, and the bearing each has on a New Testament believer’s life today. Group members will also study the Hebrew names of God introduced on the early pages of Scripture. Both sessions break during the holidays, resuming in mid-January.

• Intelligent Design

  Thursdays, beginning 6 October / continues for six weeks
  Two sessions offered: Morning session 10:30 to Noon / Evening session 6:30 to 8 PM
  Taught by Dr. Charles Axton
  Join Dr. Charles Axton as he journeys through a thought-provoking discussion of the relationship of science to faith in looking at how science catches up with faith. The class will be looking at evolution, Darwin’s theory and its premises and challenges, and the theory of intelligent design and how molecular biology may be telling a story that the Bible has already told.

• Inquirers’ Class

  Tuesdays, beginning 4 October / continues eight weeks / 6:30 to 8 PM
  Taught by the Rev. Fredrick A. Robinson, Rector
  This class is the basic requirement for all adults who desire to be confirmed or received.
  For those new to the Christian faith, to the Church of the Redeemer, or simply desiring a refresher on what it means to be a Christian in the Anglican Tradition. Particularly recommended for those who desire leadership positions within the parish.

• Bridge to the Word

  Sundays, beginning 11 September / 10:15 AM Room 207
  Group discussion
  Programs vary from a Lectionary Study to a DVD presentation and class discussion. What never varies is terrific fellowship and a great, thought-provoking exchange of ideas about God’s word. Refreshments provided; all are welcome.
